Tips for painless home styling...

Recently I asked questions of my Instagram followers about their biggest pain when styling / re-vamping their spaces. There were two very common answers:

  1. Lack of budget; and

  2. The overwhelming amount of choice.

It got me thinking, in a world where we are exposed to so many images (thanks social media) our brains are constantly taking in and processing new content. Change no longer happens gradually now, even the fashion industry is struggling to keep up with the fast transitioning colour palettes and trend forecasting.

So… how do we refresh, update or adjust our home environment without a) spending copious amounts of funds and b) without getting overwhelmed by all the choices laid out for us on a silver platter via Pinterest and Instagram?

Purchase staple furniture pieces that can be ‘dressed up’ - what I mean by this is… look at purchasing neutral coloured (black, white, beige, brown, grey, tan) big ticket items such as lounges, dining chairs and larger items of furniture. You can add colour and texture to these and your space by choosing smaller ticket items such as cushions, throws, lamps and decorator pieces that are more easily interchanged (this helps with the budget issue).

This is something I do personally on a regular basis in my space - add flowers! You’ll be surprised just how much a fresh bunch of flowers or even eucalyptus leaves can enhance / change the feel of your space. Change up where you place them each week too… on the dining table, coffee table, side table, kitchen bench. The possibilities are endless!

Your ‘style’ and ‘taste’ won’t necessarily change, however you’ll see it evolve. It can help to have an initial mood board (collection of images) to start with that sets the tone for what you’re trying to create. That way… you can stick to the ‘original plan’ as such and you’re not clocking up 1000+ hours of screen time scrolling Pinterest and getting overwhelmed and confused. Look at your mood board and ask yourself “does that colour or those tassels fit in with my original colour scheme, look and feel?”
